Technical Audit: Glass Company Sees 43% Traffic Boost
The client specializes in selling shower enclosures, custom glass panels, and other glass products to residential and commercial customers.
Since they’re both B2C and B2B, extra effort has to go into their SEO.
Why is that?
It’s because they’re catering to two distinct target audiences, which takes a nuanced approach.
That’s why they got in touch with us to develop a comprehensive SEO strategy that would appeal to both residential homeowners and commercial business owners.
Some of their most important search keywords included terms like ‘hurricane windows englewood,’ which they were able to snag the #1 spot for due to our help:
Better keyword rankings were only one slice of the pie, however.
We also improved the client’s domain rating and scored a 43% boost to their organic traffic.
The crazy thing is these results occurred shortly after we implemented fixes for issues we uncovered during our technical audit. As such, this case study is a great example of the effectiveness of technical SEO improvements.
Stay tuned to learn how we achieved these results!
The Client: A Glass Company Catering to Both Residential and Commercial Clients
The client we’re analyzing today runs a glass company out of Englewood, Florida. They’re highly experienced glass glaziers who have been in the business since 1985.
While they were well known in the area and had a great reputation among their clients, their online presence wasn’t where it needed to be.
Other glass companies in the area were outranking them for crucial keywords like ‘door installation englewood florida’ and ‘side window repair englewood fl.’
These keywords are local and have commercial intent, meaning these searches originate from locals in immediate need of a glass repair and installation service.
In other words, they’re money makers, and the client knew they were missing out on potential revenue.
That’s when they decided to hire an agency to handle their SEO since they weren’t equipped to handle it in-house. They had heard good things about us, so they reached out for a free consultation.
After getting to know their situation and goals, we determined that a fully managed SEO campaign (through HOTH X) was best. We also set up a technical SEO audit that was to take place during the first month of the campaign.
This is ideal timing, as the earlier a client can squeeze in a technical audit, the better (since it helps us avoid running into problems later on).
The Strategy: Proper Header Formatting, Compressing Images, Fixing Redirect Chains
The audit uncovered numerous technical issues, the most pressing of which were:
- Multiple and duplicate H1 headings. The highest priority issue was the presence of multiple H1 tags in the same article. Each web page should only receive one H1 tag, as it serves as the main title. After that, each subheading needs an H2, H3, or H4 tag. This client had 210 web pages with multiple H1s, which will confuse search engine bots. They also had 171 pages with the exact same H1, which is also not good. Each page must contain only one H1 tag, and it must be 100% unique from other H1s.
- 1,000+ images over 100 KB. Images that are too large in size wreak havoc on site speed and performance. For optimal speed, images shouldn’t exceed 100 KB. We found 1,035 oversized images that were crippling their website’s performance.
- Long redirect chains. Another significant issue was the number of long redirect chains present on the client’s website. 10 web pages had significant redirect chains that were slowing things down, so we recommended that the client get rid of them (and opt for single redirects whenever possible).
Once we identified these issues, our team went ahead and resolved everything on the client’s behalf. It didn’t take long after we implemented the fixes to start seeing results.
The Results: 43% More Traffic, Improved Keyword Rankings, Better Domain Rating
The keywords that we mentioned earlier saw drastic improvements a few months after the technical audit:
They’re all in the top 3 now, a few of which jumped over 5 positions after the audit.
We were also able to restore lots of backlinks which bolstered their link profile:
This client’s story serves as proof that technical audits are not only necessary but can yield positive, tangible results like higher traffic and boosted authority.
