Perfect On Page SEO Optimization

Today we’re going to be showing you the top 3 keys to getting your on-site optimization right. Let’s get right into it.

On Page SEO Optimization

1. Start With Good Keyword Research

Before we get into on-site optimization, you need to have done good keyword research. If you ignore this, it’s like strapping weights onto your feet before you start a race; You aren’t going anywhere.

You can do keyword research a million ways, and it can get really confusing, so here’s a couple quick tutorials to get you started!

When you’re building your keyword lists, don’t be afraid of synonyms. Classify your keywords in groups with similar phrases / long tails. We’ll show you how to use those next!

2. Optimize SEO Titles, Descriptions, & H1s (But DON’T Repeat!)

The strategy has changed lately – The common recommendation used to be that you put your exact match keyword in your URL, your title tag, your meta description and your H1 tag.

That’s just not the case anymore as Google is in an all out war against over-optimization.

Instead, what you want to do is use your synonyms and partial matches to give the page meaning, but not repeat the same keywords over and over.

Example: If you are ranking a page about “Boise ID Home Remodeling,” you won’t just keep hammering on that one keyphrase in your title, description, and h1.

Instead, you can replace instances of that phrase with synonyms like…

  • “Boise Idaho house remodeling”
  • “House renovation”
  • “Boise home redesign”
  • etc. etc.

Google is better at detecting synonyms now, so you’ll start ranking for more long tail phrases as well!

Check out this example of how Google is dealing with synonyms now: The graphic below is a Google search for “Metallica guitar tabs.”

Notice how the words “tabs” AND “chords” are highlighted because Google knows that they are very similar searches, even though the words are completely different.

Google treats the words “tabs” and “chords” as the same thing, so that means the more kinds of keywords and variations you have on your page, the better off you’ll be.

By using different synonyms and long tail keywords in your title tag, h1 tag, meta description, and URL, you’ll avoid on-site over-optimization AND rank for more keywords. That means more traffic and ultimately more $ for you.

If you have an existing blog, you may want to re-optimize it with this easy wordpress seo trick. With re-optimization, you can easily boost your traffic without even adding any more links or content!

3. Avoid Too Much Keyword Density

The last thing that I want to mention is a big mistake that we keep seeing, which is too much exact match keyword density on-page. (Basically, putting your keyword on your page too many times).

Have a look below at a case study site where we added in a bunch of exact match keywords to the page, increasing the keyword density.

Keyword Density
Notice how the rankings just dropped off the map in a matter of days. We removed the bloated exact match keywords and the rankings shot back up to page one.

Note: Here’s a guide for what to do when your rankings drop.

The solution is to just go into the on-page text and switch up some keywords. Use keyword synonyms so that it flows naturally but you don’t over-optimize.

There is no optimal keyword density, just try to make it as natural as possible and make sure that your keywords are on the page.
